Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
