The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
